My name is Matthew Slade. My gemstone journey started on a trip to Zambia in 2022. While I as there I encountered a priest who was trying to sell a parcel of aquamarine on behalf of some villagers who lived in a remote part of the country. Intrigued, I purchased the stones. I had friends back home who made their own jewelry and faceted gemstones as a hobby. I brought the stones home with me to show my friends. Turns out they were very poor quality! But something about that whole interaction sparked something inside me to learn more about gemstones and where they come from and how they are used in the jewelry world.
I built more connections in Zambia with people I met to start sourcing ethical gemstone rough direct from the miners. I realized that I wanted to learn what you do with the stone so I purchased a faceting machine. Instantly I fell in love with the process of creating a beautiful gemstone from rough. From there I surrounded myself with people in the industry who could help in my journey. Through all the support and mentorship I have honed my skills as a gem cutter. I am now the vice president of the Calgary Faceter’s Guild, and am working as a lapidary who specializes in repairs and customs cutting commission stones.
